As I struggled searching for an answer, a shred of truth, or a glimmer of hope in a seemingly dismal set of circumstances, I began to pray. Well, I began to cry and whine, to be honest. But God, a patient and loving Father, still answered as I listened to the prayer of a dear saint. She was praying a poetic and powerful prayer and then she said one phrase that hit me like lightening, “You’re the One Thing…”
As I continued driving, I began to think on that one phrase and therein found what I was looking for. I started taking inventory of how that one phrase could answer every tear-filled moment.
When I can’t rely on anything, He is the One Thing that is constant.
When no one can give me an answer, He is the One Thing that has them all.
When I am suffering in silence, He is the One Thing that hears my every cry.
When I feel desperate and hopeless, He is the One Thing that finds hope a home.
When I am rejected and called “less than”, He is the One Thing that calls me His own.
When I am broken and in disrepair, He is the One Thing that purposed my completion.
When I am low on courage, He is the One Thing that is perpetually heroic.
When my dreams are deflated, He is the One Thing that breathes life into them once again.
When I am afraid, He is the One Thing that answers fear with peace.
When I am troubled and overwhelmed, He is the One Thing that calms the storm-tossed waters.
When I am absent from the minds of others, He is the One Thing that is always thinking of me.
When I feel unloved and unlovely, He is the One Thing that gives me “beauty for ashes”.
When I cannot seem to put one foot in front of the other, He is the One Thing that is, “the glory and the lifter of my head.”
He has “borne our grief and carried our sorrows” and because of that I trust Him, I trust Him ruthlessly, as Brennan Manning says, and I believe…in this “One Thing.”
