“If my people, who are
called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn
from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their
sin and will heal their land.” (2Chronicles 7:14)
I have heard this scripture and I’ve read it countless
times. I’ve heard preachers refer to it while particularly preaching about
America and its need for revival. I’ve read it on plaques, heard it in songs,
and even in political speeches, yet I still felt like there was something I was
missing. But as my husband often quips, “You just can’t read the Bible; you
have to READ the Bible!” When we pick up this sacred book, we have to keep in
mind that it is living, breathing truth straight from the heart of our
sovereign God. There is meaning in
every word as well as underlying meaning in
every word. Subsequently, there is more to it that meets the eye!
I decided to read the entire chapter to see if I could gain
further insight into this verse. I discovered a prevailing theme throughout which
plainly dealt with covenant, consecration and obedience. That was the
problem…it was obvious albeit incredibly important. I wasn’t trying to uncover
a great mystery with a revelation that would stun the masses; I just knew I was
missing something. What did God mean by the phrase, “will heal their land”?
Most interpretations I’ve heard refer to this as healing our countries but
could there be more?
I thought I’d try to do a little research on some specific words.
I understood that this chapter was about the dedication of the temple which
would be a place for sacrifices for the people of Israel and their ruler,
Solomon who succeeded David. God was requiring Solomon’s faithfulness and
obedience to His decrees and also outlined what would happen if he rejected
those decrees. I think it’s safe to say that, “Obedience comes with a price
but disobedience comes with consequences”.
In verse 14, God is requiring faithfulness from His people
by telling us if we do this, He will do something-that’s how covenant works. If
we do the things he asks in that verse, then He will hear from Heaven and heal
our land…hmm. Besides our countries, what land is He talking about? Land is
defined typically as the surface of the earth, soil, specified areas, or the
people of a country. One definition that stood out to me described land as: a
realm, a domain, and a portion distinguishable by boundaries and ownership.
Eureka! I found what I wanted. My land is not just America but
it is my portion, my domain, the realm of my existence, and everything within
its boundaries, as well as what I own. Now, imagine all these things and
examine their current state. How needy is
my portion? How strong is my domain? Is the realm of my existence, and
everything within its boundaries, well and sound? Is everything I own in good
shape? With that, is there a need for healing anywhere? My answer is an
emphatic YES! God’s answer is also emphatic-do as He has commands! All He asks is that we TURN! When we turn our hearts toward God,We turn our backs to
Certainly, we desire this healing, that God wants to give us,
but what does that mean? Healing is defined (and get ready to shout!) - To make
sound or whole; to restore to health; to patch up a breech or division; and to
restore to original purity or integrity.
Our portion, our domain, what we own, the realm of our
existence and everything or everyone within the boundaries of our lives…CAN BE
HEALED! Furthermore, it can be restored, purified, made sound and whole, undivided
Just one part of one phrase made the biggest difference in
how I READ this scripture! Now I can receive this, claim it as my own and speak
it forth in faith believing! All that’s
left is found in the words of a famous slogan, “Just Do It”!
