We could never have guessed,
We were already blessed,
Where we are…
So here we are; another year begins. All we hear is going forward, make goals, leave the past behind and have hope. Go in a store and you’ll see the diet books, the diet food, the exercise equipment and all the candy on clearance! The message seems to be, “You’ve had your fun, you made a mess out of life, and you’re fat!”
I’m all for the promise of a shiny new year. I have hope and I have goals but I can’t leave everything behind. Not everything in the last year needs erased. To erase the junk, is to also erase the blessings. I had battles but I had victories. I had goals; some realized, some unrealized, and some “under construction”. I don’t want to look back and only see defeat, I want to look back and say, “Look what the Lord has done!”
This is the time that retailers take inventory of their stock before ordering for the new season. I remember “Inventory Days” when I worked retail in college. We worked with detailed lists and had to count item by item. We combed through every shelf, every rack, and every square inch of the store. The objective was obvious-we had to see what we already had. When we knew what we had, then we knew what had to go, what had to stay, and where to make room for the new merchandise.
Likewise, inventory for us is necessary. What needs to go, what needs to stay, and how and where do I make room for new and different goals. It seems that the New Year rhetoric often sees us as failures. Au contraire! Take a look at everything that you did right! Look at all the obstacles you’ve overcome! Take note of all the days you picked yourself up, dusted yourself off, and persevered through rough times! Think of all the lessons you learned and actually applied to your life! Pat yourself on the back, give God a high five, and look at the sign He has flashing for you! It says, “Applause, Applause!”
Just like any good parent, He steps aside and lets you shine like you did it all on your own! He was there and He is there. God is on the sideline of your life and is cheering you on into another year. You’ll make it across the goal line and will surely face giants along the way, but…He always shows up, He is always watching, and He is always proud to say, “That one is mine”.
Take your inventory list and head into this year with the same grit that got you through the last one! Remember, as you go, you have favor! “Grace (favor and spiritual blessing) and [heart] peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.” Titus 1:4
